There are a number of pathways to successfully achieving this qualification in engineering construction, enabling you to boost the specialist knowledge and skills you need for roles such as pipefitter and rigger.

This qualification is part of the apprenticeship framework.

This qualification is suitable for those working, or looking for work, in a number of roles within the engineering construction industry.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed such as:

  • plate work
  • steel erection
  • pipe fitting
  • welding
  • rigging
  • mechanical fitting.

You will learn in a suitable classroom and/or workshop environment.

Assessment will include a multiple choice test and centre devised practical assignments.

Level 3 is ideal if you are a more experienced learner with an understanding and practical experience of specialist engineering construction technologies and principles. It can also be used as part of an Advanced Engineering Construction Apprenticeship.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?
To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres currently offering the Level 3 Certificate in Engineering Construction (2456) have automatic approval to offer this qualification.
Learners must be aged over 16.

Level 3

This provides more experienced learners with an understanding and practical experience of specialist engineering construction technologies and principles. It can also be used as part of an Advanced Engineering Construction Apprenticeship.

There are six qualifications available at this Level. To gain a qualification you must complete one mandatory unit and a number of optional units. These include:

  • Hand cutting and shaping processes.
  • Assembly and erection of structural steelwork
  • Fabrication, installation and dismantling of pipe work systems
  • Welding with the manual metal-arc (MMA) process.
