Prove your competence in handling medication for animals with the Awards in Veterinary Medicines. For the Level 2 qualification, you'll show you have the skills and knowledge to safely store, administer, dispose of and maintain veterinary medicines. At Level 3, you'll demonstrate your ability to prepare and implement an animal health management plan. At both levels you can choose the animal or animals you want your qualification to cover.
These qualifications are for anyone who works with or wants to work with veterinary medicines. You'll typically be in a role such as farm worker, kennel worker or veterinary nurse. Those wanting to take the Level 3 Award in the Planning and Supervising the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines need to complete the Level 2 qualification first.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

For the Award in the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines, you'll cover things like:

 

  • compliance with relevant health and safety legislation
  • animal health management plans
  • administering veterinary medicines safely and humanely
  • storing and transporting veterinary medicines correctly
  • maintaining the health of the public and animals
  • disposing of veterinary medicines safely
  • recording the use of veterinary medicines
  • preventing unnecessary pain and unnecessary distress to animals
  • identifying signs of health and ill-health in animals.

For the Award in the Planning and Supervising the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines, you'll cover things like:

 

  • legal requirements relating to the planning and supervising of veterinary medicines
  • compliance with relevant legislation and welfare considerations
  • animal health management plans
  • supervising veterinary medicine use
  • legal safety points applicable to veterinary medicines
  • identifying hazards and assessing risks associated with veterinary medicines and planning for controlling these risks
  • planning suitable transport and storage facilities and supervising its use
  • planning and supervising the disposal of clinical and pharmaceutical waste
  • planning for modification of regime
  • recording systems for the use of veterinary medicines.

For these qualifications you need to show you've got a particular set of skills.

For the Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines, your assessor will check your skills through oral questioning and by observing you as you complete practical demonstrations. You'll also take an online, multiple-choice test covering the required underpinning knowledge and understanding.

For the Level 3 qualification, you will submit an animal health management plan for the safe use and storage of veterinary medicines for one or more species. Your assessor will then ask you questions about your plan to check your skills and understanding. You will also complete a written paper to show your understanding of the principles of animal health management plans.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You have some knowledge and basic skills in working with veterinary medicines - probably from a role where you work under supervision. You want to show you have the skills to safely store, administer and dispose of medicines.

Level 3
You have plenty of experience in working with veterinary medicines. You have already completed the Level 2 qualification and now want to get recognition for your skills in preparing and implementing animal health plans.

Achieving this qualification can help you work in roles such as:

  • Veterinary nurse.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver the Awards in Veterinary Medicines you'll need qualified assessors. For the Level 2 qualification, you'll assess learners through both oral and practical examinations. Learners will also take an online, multiple-choice test covering the required underpinning knowledge and understanding.

For the Level 3 qualification, learners will submit an animal health management plan for the safe use and storage of veterinary medicines for one or more species.

You will assess students on their plan through oral questioning. Learners will also complete a written paper designed to show their understanding of the background principles behind the preparation of the animal health management plan.

The facility where practical assessments take place should have a scale so that learners can demonstrate their ability to weigh animals and calculate the appropriate dose of medicine to administer.

Learners wanting to take the Level 3 qualification will need to complete the Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines first. Anyone can take the Level 2 qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.
