These qualifications are for anyone interested in a career working with land-based machinery, or boosting their existing skills and knowledge. You could be just starting out, or taking a break from a job to get some valuable training. Level 2 qualifications are suitable for learners under 16 years old, as well as older learners. Learners on Level 3 courses must be aged 16 or over.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?
At Level 2 you'll get an introduction to important topics in land-based technology. You can choose from a wide range of subjects from thermal joining processes to servicing engines.

At Level 3 you'll gain in-depth knowledge of the mechanics and science of land-based engineering. You'll also gain plenty of practical experience in servicing and repairing systems and components.

You will learn in the classroom and complete an assignment for each unit of the qualification.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You may be new to land-based technology or want to develop basic knowledge and skills. Perhaps, you want to start work in a workshop or prepare for further training.

Level 3
You may have some experience in land-based technology or have gained your Level 2 qualification. You want to develop the skills to move into a more senior, or management, role in land-based engineering, or higher level training.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress in a wide range of land-based engineering roles.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

You'll need qualified assessors, who are also qualified to Level 4 or above in land-based technology or with significant current experience of working in the industry at this level.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Internal verifiers/qualification coordinators must also be qualified or experienced in land-based technology. They should hold assessor qualifications A1 or D32/33, and hold or be working towards V1 or D34.

There are no formal entry requirements for learners undertaking these qualifications.

Learners should not be entered for a qualification of the same type, content and level as that of a qualification they already hold. However, you must ensure that learners have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully.

As part of the assessment for the Level 2 Diploma and the Level 3 Extended Diploma qualifications, learners must have access to a work setting/placement for the work experience unit.

Level 2

This level is ideal if you want an introduction to important topics in land-based technology. You might choose things like thermal joining processes or service and repair engines and components.
