Important Update: All awarding organisations are required by external regulators and funding agencies to regularly review performance and take-up of their products and services. Following a review City & Guilds has come to the difficult decision to no longer offer qualifications in Retail and Warehousing.

When we carry out reviews, there are a wide range of factors that are considered, including the number of learners taking the qualifications, assessment needs, funding, and government plans. Some qualifications are being retired, which means the published last learner registration date will not be extended. Some qualifications are being withdrawn, which means we will be bringing forward the last registration date for learners. We will of course continue to fully support our customers and learners throughout the life of the qualifications and certification activities.

Providing recognition of the skills and knowledge needed to work in or develop a career in warehousing, including operating equipment and safety at work, processing orders, team leadership and managing the receipt and dispatch of goods.

These qualifications are part of the apprenticeship framework.

These qualifications recognise the skills and competencies required of staff in the warehouse and storage workplace. These qualifications are for learners currently working in the sector and also available to those who do not currently work in the industry but would like to gain some of the skills needed.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Depending on your level and the options you choose, you will over subjects like:

operating equipment
receiving and dispatching goods
storing goods safely
processing orders.

You will learn your skills on the job or by training courses and your assessor will help you to identify if there are any skills gaps which need to be filled.

Assessment will be undertaken in the workplace while you carry out real work activities.

Which level is right for me?

Level 1
You are new to warehousing and storage and would like to start or have started working in this area in order to get your skills recognised.

Level 2
You are a warehouse or storage operative and want to have your skills recognised by a national qualification. This could also form part of an apprenticeship.

Level 3
You are working as a team leader within a warehouse operation, in addition to your normal warehouse operation activities. This could form part of an apprenticeship.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

Qualifications in Warehousing and Storage are usually delivered through work based learning.

Learners are normally assessed through workplace observation and questioning by qualified and experienced assessors.

Learners must be able to carry out the tasks required in the workplace.

Centres will require qualified assessors and internal verifiers to deliver these qualifications. Internal members of staff can be trained for these roles or they can be specifically recruited.

Centres currently offering the Levels 1 and 2 NVQ in Warehousing and Storage (1009) qualification may apply for fast track approval for this qualification at the same level.

All learners must be working within the warehousing and storage industry.

Level 1

Level 1 will suit you if you are new to warehousing and storage and would like to start, or have recently started, working in this area. You want to get your skills recognised.

There are two qualifications available at this level - a shorter award and a longer certificate. Whichever you choose, you will need to complete one mandatory unit:

Health and safety in the workplace.

You then choose a minimum of 10 credits for the award, or 14 credits for the certificate, from a range of optional units that includes:

Maintain the cleanliness of equipment in logistics operations
Keep stock levels at required levels in a logistics environment
Wrap and pack goods in a logistics environment
Use equipment to move goods in logistics facilities.

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if you are a warehouse or storage operative and want to have your skills recognised by a national qualification. This could also form part of an apprenticeship.

You will need to complete two mandatory units at this level:

Health, safety and security at work
Develop effective working relationships with colleagues in logistics operations.

You also complete a minimum of 19 credits from a range of optional units that includes:

Process orders for customers in logistics operations
Use a compact crane in logistics operations
Use a forklift side-loader in logistics operations
Contribute to the provision of customer care in logistics operations.

Level 3

Level 3 is ideal if you are working as a Team Leader within a warehouse operation, in addition to your normal warehouse operation activities. This could form part of an apprenticeship.

To achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Warehousing and Storage, learners must achieve a total of 40 credits from a range of mandatory and optional units across five groups, which include:

Supervise the receipt, storage and dispatch of goods (mandatory)
Check stock levels and stock records (group 1)
Inducting new colleagues into a logistics operation (group 2)
Arrange the transport of goods using multiple transport modes (group 3)
Optimise the use of logistics resources (group 4)
Manage the traffic office (group 5).
