4290-11, 12, 13, 17, 70 and 71 will close to new registrations on 31st May 2022 and will be replaced by our new suite of light and electric vehicle qualifications 7290.

The VRQs in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair are aimed at anyone interested in starting or developing a career in the motor industry. You do not need any previous experience or need to be in a current work placement. Most of the time these qualifications are taught in a college or training provider and learning is by doing rather than writing lots of notes.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You'll cover things like:

  • routine vehicle maintenance
  • removal and replacement of vehicle units
  • diagnosis and rectification of vehicle faults.
  • fitting and replacing vehicle tyres
  • maintenance and installation of alarms, digital instruments, satellite navigation systems, etc

To gain a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you learn with your training provider or FE college, learning by doing. Assessment is via combination of essential underpinning knowledge with practical learning. This includes practical tasks, oral/written questioning and online tests.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

For some options you'll need to simulate a workplace where learners can demonstrate skills to diagnose faults and repair vehicles.

Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if you have already developed a good foundation of skills and knowledge required to become a vehicle service technician and are ready to move to the next level. At this level you can choose from the following qualifications:

  • Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles
  • Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Principles
  • Vehicle Fitting Principles Qualifications.

This level will suit you if you have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge and looking to gain more responsibility by supervising others, running your own business or moving to a diagnostic technician level. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard. At this level you can choose from the following qualifications:

  • Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Principles.
  • Diploma in Vehicle Fitting Supervisory Principles
