This qualification is mandated within the Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship standard.

In addition to the single mandated qualification, there is a non-mandated Level 2 knowledge qualification which supports delivery of this standard and can be found at here.

There are also two non-mandated competence qualifications which support delivery of this standard. The 1271 suite can be found here.

The 1273-03 Level 3 Diploma in Machining is for learners aged 16-18, 19+ who are interested in developing the specific knowledge and understanding for people who want to work in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering sector. Upon completion of the qualification learners will have developed the knowledge required of the Machining Technician, supporting their progression to end point assessment.

A learner can also take this qualification as a stand-alone option if they are self-employed or on short-term contracts that do not support the apprenticeship.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Learners will develop the knowledge and core skills needed to be an effective Machinist. They will also learn about how engineering businesses take account of health and safety, environmental and communication considerations.

They will have the opportunity to learn how to carry out advanced operations using different manual and/or CNC machines as well as concepts related to engineering design, quality inspection, CAD/CAM, organisational efficiency and new technologies in the engineering sector.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Upon completion of this qualification, learners will have developed the knowledge and general machining skills required to progress to the end point assessment if all other requirements have been met.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications, centres will need to provide their learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the theoretical aspects of the qualification.

New centres will need to gain both centre and qualification approval. Please refer to the document Quality Assurance Standards: Centre Approval Process for further information.

Centre staff should familiarise themselves with the structure, content and assessment requirements of the qualification before designing a course programme.
