Essential to becoming a technical support technician this can be undertaken when completing an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Completed in the workplace it allows people to demonstrate their competence set against National Occupational Standards.

Engineering Technical Support is for people performing technical support activities in an engineering environment - usually people with a high level of technical skill.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed such as:

  • Engineering Drawing
  • Inspection and Testing
  • Technical Services
  • Quality Control
  • Non-destructive Testing
  • Computer Control Programming.

You will learn on the job in the work environment.

Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include a portfolio of evidence to meet the criteria of the qualification.

Is this level right for me?

Level 3
You are working in engineering and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard. You will be able to demonstrate your competence in producing engineering drawings, checking and calibrating equipment, inspecting and testing engineering products.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress in a wide range of engineering roles including:

  • CAD Draughtsperson
  • Measurement and Control Technician
  • Quality Control Inspector
  • Technical Support Person.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially. 

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Level 3

You are working in engineering and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard.


There are two options to choose from at this level:
  • Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Technical Support
  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technical Support.

Both options are comprised of six qualifications. The Extended Diplomas are a requirement of the Advanced Engineering Manufacture Apprenticeship framework.

To gain a qualification you must complete three mandatory units and a range of optional units. The mandatory units are:
  • Complying with Statutory Regulations and Organisational Safety Requirements.
  • Using and Interpreting Engineering Data and Documentation.
  • Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering.
