The Diploma in Work-based Trees and Timber enables you to develop the skills in forestry and arboriculture that employers are looking for. Pathways include forestry establishment, maintenance and harvesting, green wood trades, and arboriculture.
This qualification is for anyone, aged 16 or over, with a job or work placement as a forest worker. You don't need any previous qualifications or experience to get started.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

This qualification covers all the essential skills and knowledge for a career in forestry including:

  • Forestry harvesting
  • Forestry establishment and maintenance
  • Forestry social
  • Forestry green wood trades
  • Arboriculture.

You will learn and be assessed in the workplace. If you are taking the qualification as part of an apprenticeship, you must also take an exam.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You have some knowledge and basic skills as a forest worker. You want to develop your skills, perhaps to move from a junior position to a senior one. You might want a qualification to prepare you for further training.

Level 3
You've worked in trees and timber for some time - you have plenty of experience. You want to show that you have the skills you need to do your job well, perhaps as part of your professional development or to prepare for higher level training.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress in roles such as

  • Forest worker
  • Forest officer
  • Arboriculturalist.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

You'll need qualified assessors - either qualified to Level 3 or above in Trees and Timber or with significant current experience of working in the industry at this level. They should hold or be working towards assessor qualifications A1 or D32/33.

Internal verifiers/qualification coordinators must also be qualified or experienced in trees and timber. They should hold assessor qualifications A1 or D32/33, and hold or be working towards V1 or D34.

You also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

You can get fast-track approval for the Level 2 Diploma if you offer:

  • NPTC Level 2 NVQ in Forestry (0304-21-22) (QAN 100/2468/2)
  • NPTC Level 2 NVQ in Arboriculture (0304-23) (QAN 100/2469/4).

You can get fast-track approval for the Level 3 Diploma if you offer:

  • NPTC Level 3 NVQ in Forestry (0304-31-32) (QAN 100/2467/0)
  • NPTC Level 3 NVQ in Arboriculture (0304-33) (QAN 100/2467/0).

All learners must be employed in the trees and timber industry. You must make sure they can access all the resources they need to complete the qualification.

Level 2

This level is ideal if you have some knowledge and basic skills as a forest worker. You want to develop your skills, perhaps to move from a junior position to a senior one. You might want a qualification to prepare you for further training.

To earn this qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units.  For a full list of units, download the qualification handbook from the centre documents section.

*Please note that any new starts on the apprenticeship framework (from 27 January 2013) need to be registered on one of -71 to -73.
