The Level 2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry Light vehicle service and maintenance technicians (Diploma) has been developed as part of the Qualification Reforms in England and is available for first teaching from September 2025. 

This qualification has been designed with the involvement of a range of technical subject matter experts and employers from small, medium and large organisations to ensure that it meets the needs of the occupation. The qualification aligns fully to the occupational standard and will provide employers with reliable evidence of a learner’s attainment against the knowledge, skills and behaviour (KSBs) which form the minimum requirements for entry into occupation.

*This qualification is subject to funding approval decisions which is expected to be communicated by end of August 2024.
This qualification is for those individuals who are looking to work in the transport industry. Learners will gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge that are important when working in the transport sectors or progressing to further learning and training in these areas.

The content covers and is mapped to the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) within the ST0499 Autocare Technician occupational standard.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required for progression in the automotive industry, or to the following City & Guilds qualifications:
  • 7290-01 City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Introduction to Electric and Hybrid Vehicle High Energy Systems 
  • 7290-02 City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Safe Maintenance of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles 
  • 7290-72 City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Hazard Management of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles 
  • 7290-03 City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Component Removal and Replacement in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle  
  • 7290-04 City & Guilds Level 4 Award in Diagnosis and Rectification of Faults in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
Including Apprenticeship standard EPAs in England: 
  • Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (9301-12/13)
  •  Level 2 Autocare Technician (9304-12)                    

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?
City & Guilds expects this qualification to be delivered by highly skilled practitioners of learning delivery, assessment and quality assurance. Therefore, staff delivering these qualifications must be able to demonstrate that they meet the occupational expertise requirements outlined in the Qualification Handbook.  

Centres must be able to demonstrate that they have access to the equipment and technical resources required to deliver this qualification and its assessment. For further information please refer to the Qualification Handbook.
